Challenges
The project presented several challenges:
-
Versatile Bale Handling Required - Jadan's Big Bale Stacker needed to accommodate a diverse range of bale types: large square bales (3×3, 4×3, 4×4) and small bale packs (e.g., 21‑tie packs). No off-the-shelf machine in Australia could meet this combination, so the design had to be custom and highly adaptable.
-
Simplicity vs Complexity - The core machine was simple, but engineering it to handle multiple bale sizes, and operate on one-man, one-tractor workflow, added considerable complexity.
-
Compound Motion Handling - A key requirement was the ability to lift bales from ground level, then pivot them in two directions with a compound pivot arrangement: very challenging to model and build for robust use.
-
Efficient Early Communication - The project needed a reliable concept platform to quickly explore and share ideas before committing to fabrication.
Solution
Quantech Design embraced these challenges and employed a multi-faceted approach to bring the Big Bale Stacker to life:
-
Concept-led 3D Modelling - We began with a concept 3D model demonstrating all key motions and bale-handling sequences, providing Jadan with a clear visual, and forming a foundation for refined discussions.
-
Mechanism Design for Multiple Bale Sizes - The final design capable of handling both big square bales and small bale packs featured clever geometry and selectable handling modes, all with minimal machinery complexity.
-
Robust Compound Pivot - A dual-axis pivot mechanism was developed, allowing smooth bale turn from ground pickup into tall stack formation. This enhanced reliability and minimized damage or misalignment.
-
Collaborative Iteration - Throughout the process, Quantech worked closely with Jadan, tapping into their bale-handling expertise while delivering engineering rigour in mechanism design and structural integrity.
Results
Quantech Design's involvement in the Stacker project yielded remarkable results:
-
Versatile, Cost-Effective Solution - The finished Big Bale Stacker reliably handles varied bale formats, filling a critical gap in the Australian market where no local alternative existed.
-
Maintainable Complexity - The machine strikes the right balance, delivering highly capable stacking with simplified mechanics: reducing maintenance and fabrication cost.
-
Operational Efficiency - Jadan’s clients, whether operating in paddock or shed, can now handle up to 14 big bales or small bale packs with one man and one tractor, dramatically reducing loading time and labour.
-
Enhanced Design Confidence - The concept model enabled clear communication with Jadan, ensuring design alignment from the beginning and avoiding costly missteps.
-
Strong Partnership - The collaborative development process deepened technical trust and positioned Quantech as a reliable engineering partner for future Jadan innovations.
Jadan Group is a long-established, family-run agricultural manufacturing business based in Cowra, NSW, with over 35 years of experience delivering hay handling solutions tailored for Australian conditions.
Known for their robust, farmer-focused designs, Jadan is the only Australian manufacturer offering big bale stackers capable of handling multiple bale formats, enabling one-person, one-tractor operation for fast, safe hay stacking.
